2 эссе На английском языке Первый предмет Economics of Finance and Investment Тема эссе: In the coursework essay, you are asked to critically assess the role of financial market anomalies’ in explaining asset price fluctuations. Illustrate your analysis with at least three examples of anomalies in financial markets. Expectations regarding the depth and breadth of the information covered by your paper are going to be realistic, given the time frame and your workload. You are not expected to write a book. But you are expected to be very well informed about what is going on regarding the recent findings of financial market anomalies. Even more importantly, you must demonstrate your ability to utilize the materials learned in this class. Naturally, any statements you make in the paper have to be supported with facts, figures, or at least references to the original source Tips for Making Your Coursework Essay Look Good 1. Your project should look like a professional report and written in a professional style as in a newspaper or journal. It is strongly advised that you examine an economic journal for lay out and presentation before you start to write up. 2. Do not use the word “I” as in first, I collected my data, then I tried to work out, etc. 3. Do not use a title like “term paper” or “Economics of Financial Markets Project”. Find a title that it should tell what the project is about. 4. Put your work into spell checker before submitting it. No excuses are accepted for misspelling the common economic and finance words. 5. Never, never, never copy from any sources unless the words copied are inserted in quotation marks “…” and is properly referenced. This includes material copied from the internet. 6. Avoid long quotations. Quote for a purpose, to illustrate an argument that you wish to support or to criticise. 7. Do not use quotations as a substitute for your own exposition (this will result in a low mark). It is much better to use your own words, even if you feel that your English is not perfect. ____________________________________________________________________________ 8. Presentation matters: pay attention to style and layout. Word processing: double line-spacing with a 12 point font. 9. The introduction is where you provide a guide – a route-map – for the reader, i.e. tell the reader how your argument will develop. One recommended approach is to outline the issues (i.e. questions) that you seek to address in your paper. 10. You can choose how to organise your essay. But make sure you adopt a systematic layout, one that is transparent to the reader. 11. Keep the reader informed about the steps in your exposition: you are not writing a mystery story. Don’t leave the reader trying to puzzle out where you are in the development of your argument: make it explicit, and remind the reader why it is relevant to the questions you are addressing. 12. Try to adopt your own clear, simple and concise style. 13. Consider dividing the sections into subsections if that would enhance the transparency of your essay. 14. The conclusion is where you remind the reader of what you have done. 15. Do not forget to cite your references in the text by applying the “Harvard referencing format”. 16. Remember the examiner’s perspective: he/she will be looking for evidence that you understand the material about which you have written. (Long quotations from other sources are not regarded as evidence of understanding!) 17. Start your project as soon as possible and don’t leave it to last minute. Второй предмет Regulatory Institutions of the World Economy Темы эссе на выбор: 1. ‘It is difficult to design an optimal regulatory institution at the international level even though the case for such institutions is easy to make.’ Discuss with reference principal-agent problems and power asymmetries in the context of WTO or IMF. 2. ‘Trade-related intellectual property rights (TRIPs) have been adopted with a view to encourage fair competition at the international level, but TRIPs rules tilt the balance in favour of imperfect competition within each country and exacerbates international inequalities.’ Discuss with reference to pharmaceutical or IT industry. 3. ‘The international institutions of financial regulation have not only failed to anticipate the recent financial crisis, but also they have contributed to its occurrence.’ Discuss with reference to the quality of regulatory standards sponsored by the IMF and/or BIS. 4. ‘Structural reforms may be necessary for effective economic governance, which some developing countries may not be able to develop without an external conditionality. Yet, the structural reform agenda of the IMF and World Bank is not credible because it boils down to a ‘one size fits all’ recipe and is blind to the weaknesses of the source of its inspiration – namely the economic governance institutions of developed capitalist countries.’ Discuss. In marking the essay, the following criteria will be taken into account: 1. Introduction: • Contextualisation: Place the issue(s) raised by the essay title in the context of the course and the wider academic/policy debate on the topic. • Discovery: State what the essay will try to discover OR what questions it will address. • Structure: State the essay’s structure and ensure that this structure is appropriate for the essay’s quest for discovery. 2. Conclusion: ____________________________________________________________________________ • Active learning: demonstrate active learning by deriving conclusions related to preceding analysis • Reflection: Reflect on your work by indicating not only what you have discovered but also on policy implications for governments, business organisations or other stakeholders. 4. Presentation: • Referencing: Use the Harvard system of referencing, which is introduced in the Foundations of Scholarship course. Failure to reference may be conducive to suspected plagiarism. • Presentation: Use headings where necessary. Ensure that headings are in line with the structure indicated in the Introduction.
